AI Search Is Replacing Google — Is Your Brand Visible?

A Google rank is not an AI citation. Check ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok, and AI Overviews. Then fix the URL that already ranks.

AI Search Is Replacing Google — Is Your Brand Visible?

People ask ChatGPT for a recommendation, research in Perplexity, and read an AI Overview before they click a blue link. Google still ranks pages. Those answers cite pages they can use as a source.

If you rank and you are never named, the ranking did not save the click you already lost. Rank is not a cite.

We will not invent a share of searches, a citation rate, or a conversion lift we cannot source. The behavior is enough: the answer comes first.

The six surfaces

These are the six. Not Copilot. Reddit is not a sixth engine.

  • ChatGPT — recommendations and “what should I use.”
  • Claude — longer research. Silence still counts.
  • Perplexity — a written answer with sources in view.
  • Gemini — Google’s assistant, close to Search.
  • Grok — recent enough that a new page can show up. Still a citation check.
  • Google AI Overviews — the box above the rankings on many informational queries.

You are in the answer, or you are not. There is no position #7.

What GEO is

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is getting cited inside those answers. SEO is ranked pages in Google. The same pages and the same authority do both jobs.

It is not local SEO. It is not a city in a footer. It is not a blog cluster that restates a keyword you already rank for.

A model lifts a clear claim, a named product, a process, a place, a date. It skips a template with no facts. It skips two pages that contradict each other.

How to see if you are visible

Do not buy a dashboard for the first pass.

  1. In Google Search Console, pick five queries where you already appear. Note the exact URL that ranks.
  2. Ask ChatGPT the same query, then a brand query: “who makes [your product]” and “best [your category].”
  3. Repeat on Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, and Grok.
  4. Open Perplexity’s sources. If you are not in the list, you were not used.
  5. Run the query in Google. Does an AI Overview show. Are you in it.

Log four columns: query, surface, named or not, who else is named. That is the report.

If you rank and you are absent, fix that URL. Do not start a new blog on the same keyword. How to run the check is the method. Shopify stores hit the same gap when a collection ranks and the grid has no facts — that version is here.

Jamak logs those six surfaces in Ezeo when the work is in scope. A sheet is enough if you are doing it yourself.

What to change

One job per URL. Answer in the first sentence. Put facts on the page that already ranks. Keep About and the product pages on the same names. FAQ schema only where the page is a FAQ.

Do not buy a package that promises a citation percentage. Do not publish unsourced industry stats for a model to repeat. Do not treat llms.txt as the work.

SEO still matters. Crawlability, links, a page that deserves to rank. GEO is the citation layer on top of that. GEO is that job.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

GEO is getting cited inside AI answers on ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok, and Google AI Overviews. SEO is ranked pages in Google. The same pages should do both. GEO is not local SEO.

Q: How do I check if my brand appears in AI answers?

Use queries you already rank for. Ask the same prompt on all six surfaces. Open Perplexity’s sources. See whether an AI Overview names you. Log who is named. No dashboard required.

Q: Does GEO replace SEO?

No. GEO extends SEO. A ranking URL with no facts will not be cited. A cited page still needs to rank and convert. One set of pages.

Q: Why would I rank and still be invisible?

The ranking URL is probably a template — a grid, an empty PDP, or two pages that disagree. Answer engines skip pages they cannot use as a source.

Q: Which surface matters most?

Check all six. They do not share one index. A name in Perplexity is not a name in ChatGPT. Do not pick a favorite and ignore the rest.

Key Takeaways

  • Rank is not a cite: Page one in Google does not put you in the answer.
  • Six surfaces, not one: ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Grok, and AI Overviews. Not Copilot. Not Reddit.
  • Use queries you already rank for: Fix that URL. Do not start a new blog on the same keyword.
  • No invented rates: Named or not is the metric. Do not publish a citation percentage you cannot source.
  • SEO and GEO are one job: Ranked in Google, cited in the answer. GEO.

The work is citations on those six surfaces. GEO at Jamak.
