How to audit your Shopify apps before they cost you sales

Every app adds code to the storefront. Some earn it. List them, measure them, remove the ones that don't pay rent.
Every Shopify app was installed for a reason. A review widget for trust. A popup for emails. A bundle tool for order value. A chat bubble someone asked for in 2022.
Each one can add scripts, styles, and requests to the pages your customers load. Some earn it. Many were never checked again.
Why this hurts conversions
A slow product page loses buyers before they see the price. On mobile, every extra script competes with the image and the add-to-cart button for the same connection.
Apps also fight each other. Two popups on one visit. A sticky cart bar covering the chat bubble. A currency converter rewriting prices a second after load. Each one is small. Together they make the store feel unfinished.
And uninstalling is not always cleaning. Some older apps wrote code into the theme. Remove the app and the snippet can stay, still loading, doing nothing.
The audit, in one afternoon
- List every installed app. Settings, Apps and sales channels. Write down what each one does and who asked for it.
- Mark what touches the storefront. Back-office apps (accounting, shipping labels, inventory) usually do not load on product pages. Reviews, popups, upsells, chat, and tracking usually do.
- Measure one product page. Run your best-selling product page through PageSpeed Insights on mobile. Save the result.
- Find what each app loads. Open the page in Chrome, then DevTools, Network tab. Filter by the app's domain. Count the requests and note the size.
- Ask the rent question. For each storefront app: what number does it move, and can you see that number? Reviews can show up in conversion. A popup shows in signups. "We might need it" is not a number.
- Check the theme for leftovers. Search the theme code for the names of apps you already removed.
What to do with the list
Keep apps that move a number you can see.
Merge apps that do the same job. Two review tools, two upsell tools, three tracking pixels for one ad account.
Replace apps that do something the theme can do natively. Many modern themes handle badges, size charts, and simple bundles without an app.
Remove the rest, then clean the theme. Re-run the same PageSpeed test on the same page and compare.
Change one thing at a time on the money pages. If conversion moves, you will want to know which change did it.
What not to buy
A "speed booster" app to fix the speed problem other apps caused. A theme rebuild before the audit. Any app that cannot tell you what it loads on the storefront.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How many Shopify apps is too many?
There is no safe number. One heavy app on the product page can cost more than ten back-office apps. Count what loads on the storefront, not what is installed.
Q: Does uninstalling an app remove its code?
Newer apps built on theme app extensions are removed cleanly. Some older apps edited theme files directly, and that code can stay after uninstalling. Search the theme for the app's name.
Q: Which page should I test first?
Your best-selling product page on mobile. It carries the most revenue and usually the most apps.
Q: Will removing apps raise my conversion rate?
Not automatically. Removing weight helps the page load. Whether it lifts sales depends on what the app did. Remove, measure, then decide.
Q: How often should I audit?
Every time you add an app, and once a quarter for the full list. Apps update, and what loaded lightly last year may not now.
